Happy New Year, Sports Fans! It’s another great day at Sports Scene.

It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly 2013, and we are halfway through our fourth year bringing you the best high school sports coverage we can. Where has the time gone?

With that being said, the holiday season is about family. Sports Scene has formed a tremendous bond with our readers over the past three years, and we are proud of what we have been able to accomplish through words and photos, and we have taken steps to build positive relationships in our communities.

In 2013, we hope to continue what we have started while building a stronger union among our readers.

People always offer words of encouragement and wish lists they would like to see fulfilled in the coming year. Here is Sports Scene’s take on the 2013 wish list. Enjoy.

1. More focus on the ‘student’ part of student-athletes.

Missy Franklin surprised the world by wanting to remain amateur. It would be great to watch more athletes like her. Men’s college basketball would be easier to follow if the players stayed for a degree. It would also be more helpful for these athletes when they retire to have a second career.

2. Rules for college athletes streamlined.

How great would it be if fewer scandals erupted after student-athlete guidelines were erased and reworked? There needs to be a way for the money that  these players create to help them, instead of the people sitting behind the desks in front offices.

3. We need pro hockey

Nothing against minor league hockey, but the National Hockey League needs to iron out its differences and end this stupid lockout. We need our Red Wings back now.

4. Don’t miss out watching a Freeland girls basketball game

If you happen to not be doing something when the Freeland girls basketball team is in town, make sure you go watch, because Tori Jankoska is definitely worth the price of admission. To see someone with that much passion for the game is why we do what we do.

5. The High vs The Hill

This game is always a big one, but this year both teams should be undefeated heading into the January 4 matchup at Arthur Hill. This is probably one of the most anticipated regular season games in the last 10 years. Jalen Adams and Eric Davis lead the Lumberjacks, while Julian Henderson and Keon Addison lead the High. Don’t be surprised if the winner of this game makes another run at a Class A title.

Lastly, Sports Scene wishes our readers a prosperous New Year. Remember, if you were not at the Scene…Get the Scene.
