The 15th annual Mike Adamson Ionia Wrestling Invitational featured extremely stiff competition with the Portland Raiders placing eighth out of 10 teams on Saturday.

Hunter Scott, a junior, had the best day for Portland at 189 pounds. He advanced to the finals but lost on a pin in 5:40 to Casey Watson of Onaway to take second place.

“We’re a young team just trying to get in some quality matches,” said Portland coach Scott Sandborn. “I think the kids are making progress.”

Scott finished 4-1 for the day.

Tony Savage of Portland was sixth at 112 pounds, losing his final match to Codi Wiersema of Unity Christian.

At 119 pounds, Portland’s Hayden May lost his last match 6-0 to Derek Cole of Unity Christian and took fifth place. Portland’s Alex Young won 10-4 for third place in his final match of the day at 130 pounds.

Derek Garner of Portland was fourth at 152 pounds.
