Ferris State football

Tony Annese, who built powerhouses at Muskegon High School and Grand Rapids Community College, will try to do the same at Ferris State University. The Bulldogs were 6-5 last season under coach Jeff Pierce, who was fired and replaced by Annese. Ferris returns 18 starters.

Offense: Honorable mention returnees on offense are senior tailback Skyler Stoker and senior offensive tackle Trevor Smolinski.

Defense: Leading the way are senior linebacker Tayo Moss, tabbed as a Preseason All-American after earning All-GLIAC First Team honors a year ago and senior defensive end Jordan Morgan, a second-team choice in 2011.

Scouting Report: Annese hopes to have a more versatile offense.

Our Take: Pierce was fired despite having a 6-5 season. More will be expected of Annese. Expect an eight-win season.

Coach’s Comment: “We want to make improvements and meet every challenge every day. We’re excited. We’re doing new things offensively and defensively. We have a philosophy that you have to run the ball to be successful. Our philosophy is we want to win every game. We’ll try to be the best we can be and play to the best of our ability. We’ll count the wins and losses at the end, and hopefully, it will be a good deal.”
