After falling short in last year’s Division 7 state title game, the Pewamo-Westphalia football team opened the season dropping a contest to another state finalist from last year.
Lansing Catholic Central defeated the Pirates 45-21 in the opener for both teams. Pewamo-Westphalia quarterback Kyle Nurenberg paced the offense as he passed for 174 yards and ran for 85 more. Nurenberg also threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran in a touchdown.
Wide receiver Lane Simon caught three passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.
The Pirates return to action Thursday when they host Potterville.
