Sports Scene Softball Dream Team
Player of the Year
P Sam Willman, Breckenridge
Sam Willman, a standout athlete at Breckenridge the past four years, concluded her senior year for the Huskies in dominating fashion by by going 24-6 with a .39 earned run average in 195 1/3 innings. She also struck out 393 and pitched five perfect games, including a 27-strikeout game.
P Morgan Groom, Lowell
Lowell, which was led by Harvard-bound senior pitcher Morgan Groom, won the OK White Conference championship and completed the regular-season with an overall record of 32-6-1. But the Red Arrows had to sit out the post season because they played one too many regular season games.
P Mackenzie Boehler, Swan Valley
The Wayne State-bound Boehler led the Vikings to the Division 2 state title game, behind a 23-2 record with 306 strikeouts, only 16 walks, and an ERA of .4.
P Sarah Appold, Valley Lutheran
Appold finished her career as a Charger making all-state in softball, basketball, and volleyball. On the diamond this spring, she had a .56 ERA and a 23-5 record and struck out 334. The four-year varsity player had 12 career no-hitters and two perfect games, and she set the school’s career wins and strikeouts records, among others. She will play softball at Saginaw Valley State University next year.
P Kelsey Poag, Sacred Heart Academy
Poag guided the Irish to the Division 4 state semifinals. She completed her season going 20-5 with six shutouts, a 1.66 ERA, and 167 strikeouts. Offensively, she finished with a .341 batting average along with a .401 on base percentage. She recorded 45 hits, 37 RBIs, four doubles, and five triples.
INF Jordyn McCann, Mt. Pleasant
A sparkplug at the top of the Oilers order, McCann accounted for 41 runs, 49 hits, 30 RBI, 11 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and a .383 batting average. She drew nine walks, had a .460 on base percentage, and .946 fielding percentage.
INF Hayley Cruthers, Swartz Creek
Only a junior, Cruthers helped lead the Dragons to the Division 1 quarterfinals. She hit .517 on the season with eight homeruns and a team-record 62 runs scored. She also recorded 20 stolen bases and 24 doubles.
INF Mary Berden, Swan Valley
Berden, a senior, compiled a .660 on base percentage, with 49 walks and a .390 batting average. She also stole 59 bases and scored 50 runs.
INF Sara Hansen, Sacred Heart Academy
The record-breaking sophomore shortstop for the Irish had a season to remember. She set three Michigan High School Athletic Association records. She had a hit in all 39 games the Irish played, notching 100 hits and scoring 82 runs. All three of those marks are new state records. She hit at a .633 clip for the year with a .653 on base percentage, six doubles, four triples, two home runs, 39 RBIs, and 33 stolen bases.
OF Sara Hartley, Birch Run
Hartley hit .456 with 33 singles, 14 doubles, 10 triples, and 23 RBI. She will play at Oakland University next year.
OF Lacy Tolfree, Heritage
Just a sophomore, Tolfree was a solid member of the Hawks team. She recorded 82 hits and a .617 batting average, while scoring 70 runs and recording 17 assists from center field.
C Maison Kalina, Bullock Creek
Sophomore Kalina hit over .500 for much of the season before finishing at .484 and was rock solid behind the plate. She had an on base percentage of .525 with 60 hits, 33 runs scored, and 31 RBIs. She was also solid defensively behind the plate.
Coach of the Year
Amy Gaudard, Sacred Heart Academy
Gaudard led the Irish to a 31-8 record and only their second-ever appearance in the state semifinals.
