Detroit area high school teams dominated the action at the girls’ state tennis finals this season. All four divisions were won by teams from Metro Detroit, and two of the four second-place teams were also from Southeast Michigan.
In Division 1, Grosse Pointe South took first place with 26 points, while Clarkston and Port Huron Northern tied for second with 25. From mid-Michigan, Midland Dow placed seventh, Grand Blanc took 12th, and Rockford and Grand Ledge tied for 17th.
In singles action, Hailey Barrett of Grand Ledge reached the semifinals at No.1 singles, while Midland Dow’s Kelli Close reached the semis at No. 2 singles. Elaina Parrillo of Dow reached the quarterfinals at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Dow’s Allie Vickery reached the final, where she fell to Maggie Sweeney of Grosse Pointe South.
A trio of area doubles teams also reached the quarterfinals, including Grand Blanc’s No. 1 team of Andrea Thompson and Ola Nowakowska, Grand Blanc’s No. 2 team of Morgan Ulseth and Hali MacMillan, and Dow’s No. 4 team of Jessica Oh and Bridget Bush.
In the Division 2 finals in Kalamazoo, a trio of area singles players won championships. The biggest story at the D2 meet was Mason’s Abby Perkins. Seeded fifth, Perkins defeated fourth-seeded Irene Ng of Okemos in the quarterfinal, No.-1 seed Mollie Fox of Bloomfield Hills Lahser in the semifinal, and second-seeded Kerry Hu of Bloomfield Hills Andover in the final.
At No. 2 singles, top-seeded Emily Struble of Okemos captured the title, while top-seeded Draga Sabotic of Okemos won the title at No. 3 singles.
Okemos also had a pair of doubles teams reach the quarterfinal round, as Catherine Wingrove and Maya Srkalovic reached the quarters at No. 2, and Revema Moore and Natasha Ghose reached them at No. 4.
Birmingham Seaholm won the Division 2 team title, while Forest Hills Northern placed second. Okemos placed sixth as a team, while Mason placed 12th and East Lansing 18th.
In the Division 3 meet in Holly and Fenton, Cranbrook Kingswood dominated the action. It won all four doubles flights and also took No. 1 singles and earned 34 points. East Grand Rapids took second with 25 points. DeWitt placed 15th overall, while Haslett took 16th.
Among area individuals, Haslett’s Shea Donahue reached the semifinals at No. 2 singles.
DeWitt had a pair of doubles teams reach the quarterfinals, as Anna Hogg and Hannah Schroeder reached the quarterfinals at No. 1 doubles, and Morgan Smith and Jessica Reid reached the quarterfinals at No. 2 doubles.
In the Division 4 finals in Holland and Grand Rapids, Academy of the Sacred Heart from Bloomfield Hills took first with 29 points, while St. Mary Catholic Central placed second. Williamston finished in fourth place while Lansing Catholic was fifth, Portland eighth, Nouvel Catholic Central 11th, and Frankenmuth 14th.
Individually, the area had a number of strong efforts. At No. 3 singles, Calla Ramont of Lansing Catholic won the title. Charlie Greenhoe of Portland, Katie Nix of Williamston, and Kristina Barrett of Frankenmuth all reached the quarterfinal round.
At No. 1 singles, Claire Cooper of Williamston reached the semifinals.
At No. 2 singles Katie Blake of Portland reached the final round. Ann Marie Barrett of Frankenmuth and Mia Flynn of Lansing Catholic both reached the quarterfinals.
At No. 4 singles Marissa Ellsworth of Williamston reached the semifinals, while Mary Schneider of Lansing Catholic reached the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Claire Dijack and Abbey Hagen of Nouvel and Jaquie Platte and Laura Ness of Portland reached the quarterfinal round in the No. 1 flight.
At No. 2 doubles, McKenzie Scofes and Emily Carl of Lansing Catholic and Emma Grooms and Lindsey Hirt of Williamston reached the semifinals. Carmen Wittkop and Lauren Manzini of Portland and Kirsten Babinski and Amanda Harvey of Nouvel reached the quarterfinals.
At No. 3 doubles Sarah Thelen and Julie Xu of Williamston reached the quarterfinals, while their teammates Carolina Marshall and Macy Pell of reached the quarterfinals at No. 4 doubles.
