The Midland High wrestling team has hovered around .500 this season, earning an 11-9 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Saginaw Valley League duals prior to press time.

“This season so far has been a lot of ups and downs,” head coach Carl Hoffman said. “We started off looking like a good dual team, but weeks into the season, many wrestlers didn’t stay committed.”

The Chemics voided as many as four weight classes at times this season but have since been able to field close to a full squad, although in order to do that, they were forced to start some inexperienced grapplers.

Wrestlers who have stood out so far this year, according to Hoffman, are seniors Chris Longoria (135 pounds) and Knute Hoffman (171), junior Tarrance Thomas (189), and freshman Zach Schnieder (112). Each wrestler has five or fewer losses this year.

“We are very close to beating some good wrestling teams, and when we are all there and able to wrestle we are pretty good,” Hoffman said. “We just have been very inconsistent with who is in our lineup. I feel we have the potential to pull together and win our team districts.”
