Morley Stanwood has started its boys basketball season with a 5-4 record, but junior Travis McCuaig has been lighting up the baskets with his prolific shooting abilities.
“We had a rough start, but as a team we’re getting it done,” he said.
In an early season 63-60 loss to Pine River, McCuaig tallied 27 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists. He’s a scorer, but not just a scorer.
“It’s probably my best game so far this season,” McCuaig said. “I like shooting the threes. I wanted to play a real hard game.
“We played a hard game,” he said of the loss. “It just didn’t turn our way.”
In a 64-44 trouncing of Chippewa Hills, McCuaig hit three triples and wound up with 15 points.
“I started out rough the first game, but I think I’m getting it back,” he said. “Taking it to the hole would be my strongest point.”
This is McCuaig’s second varsity season, and he is actively working on his passing.
“I think we have pretty good potential, but we’ll have some tough games in our league,” he said, referring to the Central State Activities Association. “We just have to run our game. We have to come out strong.”
The Mohawks are 5-1 in the league. Their biggest win of the season was against CSAA power Reed City in 71-61 win. McCuaig had 21 points and 10 rebounds in that game.
