The Owosso boys basketball team has a little good news and a little bad news this season.
The bad news is that the team graduated a number of experienced players last season.
“We have a lot of new faces on the varsity team this year,” said coach Dave Owens, who is entering his 11th season as coach of the Trojans. “We lack experience, and our success will depend on how well our players can adjust to the pace of the varsity level and to see who will provide the scoring to replace our graduated seniors.”
The good news is that the Trojans return one of the premier players in the league in Robert Geoghegan. A junior, Geoghegan was the team’s MVP last winter.
“Robert will be a strong player for us,” said Owens. “Because of our style of play, we won’t score a lot of points, but he will be our leader and do an excellent job of running the team.”
The Trojans do have a few players returning along with Geoghegan.
“Nate Hall will be important in helping Robbie with the ball handling, while Ben Marr will provide some experience in the post,” Owens said.
Mixing in with the veterans will be some talented newcomers who bring some height.
“We add two new players to the team in Matt Thornton and Matt Freeman that possess big bodies and prove to be difficult to play against,” Owens said. “It will be interesting to see how they fit into the program. Hopefully we will be competitive in our games and have some exciting games which we can pull off some wins.”
