The Corunna boys basketball team is starting a new chapter and turning to a former player who was part of some recent success to lead the way.
Kyle Clough, a starting point guard on Corunna’s final four team in 2003, takes over as head coach of the Cavaliers this season.
Corunna turned in a 3-18 record last season, but the outlook is positive heading into this season.
The Cavaliers return a pair of starters, led by senior forward Joey Janca (6’2″). A good team leader, Janca is a former point guard who rebounds and defends well.
Sophomore guard MJ Myles (6’0″) also returns. Myles started all 21 games as a freshman last season and was not only the team’s MVP, but also earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Myles is an excellent shooter and can also finish off the dribble.
The Cavaliers also have a number of other players who also saw substantial playing time last year. Senior Brandon Hannah (6’0″) has an excellent outside shot with range beyond the three-point arc. Junior Johnny Fattal (5’6″) is an outstanding all-around athlete who will play the point guard spot. Fattal has excellent quickness and good court awareness. Junior forward Mitch Poirier (6’3″) is an athletic forward who plays good defense and is a strong rebounder. Junior Hank Sizemore (6’4″) will also see action along the front line. Sizemore is a strong rebounder and defender who is developing shot-blocking skills. Senior Cory Peisert (6’1″) is a versatile player who can play either in the backcourt or frontcourt and is a good leader. Junior Josh Osika (5’10”) is an athletic guard who plays good defense. Sophomore Grant Renwick (5’10”) saw significant minutes in last year’s district tournament and is a very athletic player who can play strong defense.
“We will be very quick,” Clough said. “Our team speed is excellent. We will be able to put a lot of pressure on teams defensively. We also have numerous players who can shoot the ball.”
