While the Laingsburg football team extended its string of winning seasons this fall, the Wolfpack saw another streak come to an end.
For the sixth consecutive year, the Wolfpack finished with a winning record, turning in a 5-4 mark this season. The five wins, however, were not enough to qualify for the playoffs, and the Wolfpack will miss the postseason for the first time since 2005.
Senior quarterback Derrick McAvoy did everything he could to try and get the team into the playoffs. He actually did a little bit of everything for the team this fall. As a quarterback, he completed 72 of 153 passes (47%) for 1,322 yards and 16 touchdowns. He had a high game of 235 yards passing against St. Patrick Catholic, and he threw for 211 yards against Carson City-Crystal.
At 6’1″ and 210 pounds, McAvoy also proved to be a punishing threat running the ball, rushing for 557 yards (6.1 avg.) and scoring 12 rushing touchdowns. His top rushing game was 157 yards against Dansville.
McAvoy also led the way on defense, as he paced the Wolfpack with 104 total tackles.
If that wasn’t enough, McAvoy also punted the team out of numerous jams, averaging 41.6 yards every time he did so.
Other Laingsburg players contributed to the Wolfpack’s average of 33.8 points per game.
Senior running back Trevor Marshall rushed for 475 yards (5.1 yard avg.) and scored five touchdowns.
Junior Shaun McKinney was a two-way threat for the Wolfpack. He led the team in receiving this season, hauling in 21 passes for 520 yards (24.8 yards avg.) and seven touchdowns. McKinney also intercepted a team-high three passes on defense.
Junior tight end Sam Edwards (6’4″, 205 lbs.) also had a big season. He caught 20 passes this season for 277 yards (13.8 yards avg.) and five touchdowns.
CROSS COUNTRY
Although small in number and low on experience, the Laingsburg cross country teams continue to lower their times as the season progresses.
At the CMAC meet at Pewamo-Westphalia, senior Zachary Little placed 16th overall with a time of 17:55.6. Freshman Ian Stewart placed 24th overall with a time of 18:45.4, followed by freshman Logan Stahl (47th, 20:11.5), freshman Justin Morles (53rd, 20:38.9), and freshman Alex Sperry (57th, 21:08.4).
On the girls’ side, sophomore Madeline Johnson placed 33rd at the CMAC meet with a time of 23:32.5. Junior Tressa Borris placed 53rd with a time of 27:11.3.
