Herman Mason, a senior wide receiver, loves catching passes. His Lansing Sexton teammates love getting the ball to him.

“It’s been pretty good,” he said of his season, adding that he’s improved “a lot.”

This season, “I have more knowledge in catching,” Mason said.

He has caught more passes this season. He was at 17 catches for 215 yards after eight games.

“My skills have improved, and we’re passing the ball more this year,” he said. “I get open, and I have good hands and run good routes. I’ve gotten more knowledgeable, and I’m more focused.”

Mason is one of the team’s main receivers. Among the memorable wins he enjoyed this season were those over East Lansing and Okemos. Sexton was 5-3 going into the last week of the season.

“We can’t make any mistakes,” Mason said.

He’s played receiver since Little League simply because of his love for catching passes.

Mason also runs track, doing the 400-meter dash and the long jump. Track complements his talents for football, Mason added.

“He’s done really well,” said Sexton coach Dan Boggan. “He runs outstanding routes. He’s gotten big catches in big games so far this year. He’s improved in every area. In his catching ability, he’s improved tremendously.

“We actually pass 40 to 45 percent of the time. It’s a big plus, it helps our running game. It loosens up our running game.”
