Paced by a talented junior class, the Durand girls cross country team has been blazing the trails this fall.
They were at their best at the GAC conference championships and captured the league title. Durand finished with 30 points to outdistance second-place Goodrich, which finished with 46 points.
Junior Madi Atkinson led the way for Durand, as she placed first overall in a season-best time of 20:15. Fellow junior Jamie Madrigal placed second overall and recorded a season-best time of 21:05.
Junior Sacha Flagg gave the Railroaders three of the top four spots, as she placed fourth overall. Flagg turned in a season-best time of 21:14.
Freshman Katie Duguid placed eighth in 21:42, while junior Alexis Madrigal was 19th in a time of 22:32. Both Duguid and Madrigal ran personal-best times.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Durand boys cross country team finished the conference season with a fifth-place finish at the GAC league meet.
Freshman Zach Atkinson led the way for the Railroaders, taking 12th place in 18:17. Senior Aaron Walkling took 14th in 18:20, followed by senior Cody Duguid (22nd, 18:51), junior Drew Cannoy (35th, 19:50), and freshman Evan Gardner (41st, 20:36).
FOOTBALL
The Durand football team ended the season with an 0-9 record after dropping a 42-28 decision to Perry in the final game of the season.
The Railroaders received strong play from quarterback Riley Warren down the stretch. He ran for 141 yards and passed for 113 yards and two touchdowns in Durand’s game against Beecher in week eight. Jacob Sabaj caught both touchdown passes in that game.
