After graduating 13 players off last year’s team, Swartz Creek soccer coach Ken Koffkey knew that some rebuilding would be in store this fall.
“This is a rebuilding season for us,” Koffkey said. “We are a very young team. We only have four seniors this year.”
With a young team, the Dragons are concentrating on playing solid defense to keep them in matches. Anchoring the Swartz Creek defense is senior defender Dan Harrington and sophomore defender Trevor Sexton.
“Dan is just `Mr. Hustle’ for us,” Koffkey said. “He does not let up from the time the game starts to the last whistle.
We’ve moved Trevor around this year. He started on defense, and then we moved him to midfield, and now he’s seeing time at forward. He has a very good shot, and we want him to help us get going on offense.”
Harrington is one of three captains on this year’s team. Senior goalkeeper Derek Holbeck and sophomore midfielder Jackson Maxwell are the other team captains.
With the soccer season heading for the home stretch, Koffkey is looking for the team to continue to improve.
“We want to gain more experience and build more team cohesiveness,” Koffkey said. “We are a pretty cohesive team, but we have to learn each other’s particular styles and what to expect from each other.”
