New Saranac head volleyball coach Karen Rohrer says the key to having a successful season is hitting. While her young squad has shown flashes of aggressiveness on offense and the ability to hit the ball, a sustained hitting effort would go a long way in improving the team’s outlook for the rest of the season.
“You can’t go out there on the court and expect to win at the varsity level without hitting,” Rohrer said. “Right now, we stopped hitting and being aggressive.”
Along with improving their hitting skills, Rohrer has the players lining up at different positions and filling different roles.
“We have been adjusting, and this was a new lineup here tonight,” said Rohrer, following Saranac’s league match with Potterville. “I think once the girls get comfortable with it, they will be stronger.”
Senior leadership is going to be key for Saranac.
“Keri Overbeck and Sabrina Mackey are my senior leaders, and they have really been aggressive,” said coach Rohrer.
Other seniors contributing to the team are Macy Adrianse, Charna Brooks, and Morgan Middaugh.
“I’ve also got a junior, McKenzie Manion, that has been great on the outside and becoming a more consistent hitter.”
The Redskins have a record of 2-3 right now, and coach Rohrer knows that once her team gets stronger and more aggressive, they will improve on that.
“Our goal is to be in the top half of our league this year, so we are going to have to push a little more and get a little stronger to get there,” Rohrer said. “We just need to keep learning and keep playing smart as the season goes on.”
