When Rockford starting quarterback Mark LaPrairie was knocked out of the season opening game against Lowell, many people thought that the Rams would finally be vulnerable.
While the Rams fell to the Red Arrows on opening night and were without LaPrairie for the next two games, the Ram offense did not miss a beat.
Junior quarterback Kyle Short stepped into the breach and guided a Ram offense that proved to be as potent as ever as Rockford defeated Holt in it’s final non-conference game and then opened O-K Red play with a pair of wins.
“Kyle’s done a marvelous job,” Rockford coach Ralph Munger said. “You know and just think of the experience he’s getting, for both this season and next. He‘s a heck of an athlete. He‘s had a couple of bumps in the road but he‘ll get better.”
Rockford defeated Holt in the first game after the loss to Lowell and then opened O-K Red conference play with wins against Grand Haven and West Ottawa.
While the loss to Lowell was disappointing, the Rams quickly regrouped and overcame the sting of the loss and the absence of LaPrairie who missed both the Grand Haven and West Ottawa games.
“Our confidence has really improved,” Munger said. “We starting to learn to play with each other a little more and that type of thing. You know that’s huge as we move on.
