At 6 feet, 7 inches and 290 pounds, Holt senior tackle Ben Steward is hard to miss.
The anchor of the Rams’ offensive line, Steward is at his best opening up running room for Rams ball carriers and protecting the passer on Friday nights before packed houses at Holt High School.
“It’s a wonderful experience to have,” said Steward about being on center stage on fall Friday nights. “All the lights are on, and people focus on you and can see when you make a mistake. The pressure is on you. It’s an experience everyone should have.”
Steward enjoys the whole experience of playing high school football.
“Being with my teammates and coaches is great,” Steward said. “There’s nothing I’d rather do. There is nothing more I can ask for out of high school football.”
One of the top high school linemen in the state, Steward was recruited by a number of Mid-American Conference schools.
“Recruiting was real hectic,” Steward said. “Everybody said it would be like a rollercoaster ride of emotions and it was. It was also real fun and can be real exciting.”
Steward eventually settled on Bowling Green as the MAC school where he will continue his career.
“It was very tough,” Steward said. “The football programs everywhere were about the same and the facilities were pretty close. The coaches were all good coaches. It came down to basing my decision on academics and what I want to study.”
Playing college football was always a goal for Steward, who was also motivated by his mother.
“I went out for football in the fifth grade,” Steward said. “My mom told me back then that I could get a scholarship to play college football. I worked for it since then, and fortunately I will have the opportunity.”
