This year, Belding took part in the Lowell Pink Arrow Project when its volleyball team played outdoors and for one day became the “Pinkskins”.
The outdoor volleyball game was held along with a boys soccer game and a football game. The players wear pink to honor a member of the community or a family member who is battling cancer.
“This was so emotional, and I’m very proud to have been a part of it. My father lost his battle with leukemia this past summer, so this especially touched me,” said Belding head coach Mikayla Linebaugh. “ It was also very emotional for my mother who was there and who purchased our special pink-out uniforms in honor of my dad.”
“The girls have been looking forward to this game, even though they have never played as a team outdoors. I told them this wasn’t about a game but so much more, so just go out there and have fun. We all felt very honored to be there,” she said.
The Lady Pink Arrows defeated Belding 25-13,14-25,25-18.
Gabby Holyfield led the Pinkskins with three blocks and six kills. Kyleigh Linebaugh added 16 assists and eight digs, while teammate Mindy Reminga added two kills and five blocks.
Coach Linebaugh has started a tradition of her own in Belding, with the first ever pink out volleyball game played against Sparta on September 20. They will also have a 5K Glow Run from the football field to Candlestone golf course after the pink out football game on September 23.
