The Midland football team put itself in good position to win the Saginaw Valley League North Division September 21.
With an exciting 41-34 win over Mount Pleasant Sept. 21, the Chemics are now 3-0 in the league, while Mount Pleasant, which has won the past three league titles, fall to 2-1 prior to press time.
But Midland coach Eric Methner isn’t ready to crown his team just yet.
“We are playing pretty good” Methner said. “We try to take it one game at a time Our focus [last] week [was] Mount Pleasant; we don’t want to look too far ahead.”
Midland is taking it one game at a time, and all five games the Chemics have played this year have been impressive, including week one and week two wins over Canton and Davison, respectively.
The team has been getting solid play from senior quarterback Alex Johnson, senior wide receiver Ryan Singer, senior offensive tackle Steven Elmer, senior defensive tackle Terrence Thomas, linebackers Michael Alexander and Scott Naples, and senior safety Alex Goodwin.
“We have had some timely key plays,” Methner said. “We had a great game with Canton in the opener, we made some big plays in that game. Same thing in the Davison game. Then the Saginaw Heritage game, it was a night where it poured for two hours. I’ve never been in a game where it poured so hard, and that was a great equalizer. In that game our defense played great; a tough, hard-fought game.”
The next two games for the Chemics come against Bay City Central and Saginaw, two teams that are struggling a bit this season. But Midland hosts undefeated Bay City Western in week eight and travels to Midland Dow week nine to take on the Chargers, who are 3-1 in the league after week five of the season.
“When you consider the North and South Division, there are some tough games,” Methner said. “We will see how some things shake out.”
