One of the finest seasons in Rockford girl’s soccer history came to an end in the championship match of arguably the toughest soccer district in the state when the Rams dropped a 1-0 decision to East Kentwood.
A total of four state-ranked teams were involved in the Rockford district with the championship match coming down to a battle of two of the premier teams in the OK Red.
East Kentwood’s Casey McMillan scored on a header in the first half, which was the lone goal of what was a defensive struggle in the district title match.
“It was a high-level game,” Rockford coach Steve Thomas said. “Both teams played with an enormous amount of energy.”
Rockford held East Kentwood to two shots on goal. Rockford’s Marissa Platz made one save. East Kentwood’s Kara Scaturro made six saves.
“We talked about it being a game of inches today,” Thomas said. “Give them credit, they were opportunistic today.”
Rockford finished the season 18-3-1.
“I felt like we took the fight to East Kentwood today,” Thomas said. “We were the more physical team today.”
The district title game was the final high school game for graduating seniors Kaitlin Mokosak, Katie McCabe, Sam Anderson, Mikaela Harrell, Erica Scott, Mikayla Goldsmith and Jordyn Ryfiak.
Ryfiak led the Rams with a school-record 29 goals this season.
