For the second straight season and third time in the last four years Morley Stanwood’s girls basketball team is undefeated after a 20-game regular season.
The Mohawks secured another 20-0 season with a 73-32 victory over Central Montcalm on Friday.
Morley Stanwood is also the Central State Activities Association champs. The Mohawks have won a conference title for 11 straight seasons.
Morley Stanwood has been ranked No. 1 in Class C in the later weeks of the regular season by the Associated Press.
“It’s never easy to go 20-0,” said Morley Stanwood coach Bob Raven. “There’s a lot of competition. To do it this year, it’s a good feat.”
The Mohawks didn’t have many problems in most of their games, but it’s a factor that concerns Morley Stanwood fans who realize district opponents like Shelby, and other teams down the road could pose a serious threat to the Mohawks.
During the regular season, Freeland gave Morley Stanwood its toughest battle before faltering to the Mohawks. But it was the type of close game Raven didn’t mind seeing for his team.
“It was the tournament kind of game, I think, for both teams,” Raven said. “We scheduled it for late in the year, which helps. We had McBain earlier in the season but beat them by 20. But that was one of those games in which we shot well. I’m not sure we’re 20 points better than they are.”
Bailey Cairnduff and Alex Huntey, who led the Mohawks volleyball team to a state title, hope to do it again for basketball. Cairnduff has committed to Bowling Green for basketball and Huntey to George Washington for volleyball.
