BATTEL CREEK — The Shelby and New Lothrop Division 4 semifinal at the MHSAA Team Wrestling Finals gave us another nail biter.
Shelby needed a major decision victory from Mason Courtright at 189 pounds, and got it, as he beat Spencer Gross 17-5 to knot the score at 28-28 Saturday morning at Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena.
That sent the referees to the scorecard, where Shelby was declared the winner on the fourth tiebreaker, most pins (2-1).
The Tigers now advance to Saturday evening’s finals, where they will take on thiree-time defending state champion Hudson, which had a much easier time of it in its semifinal. There, those Tigers whipped Manchester 48-14.
In Division 3, Whitehall, which upset Remus Chippewa Hills in the quarterfinals, gave perennial power Dundee all it could handle, before falling to the Vikings 34-21.
Dundee, which was down 14-13 midway through the match, won five matches that were determined by three points or less.
The Vikings will now take on two-time returning champion Richmond, which easily beat Birch Run 47-15 in their semifnal.
