February was a good month for the Coleman Comets boys basketball team.
The Comets played Ashley on Feb. 4 at The Palace of Auburn Hills, home of the Detroit Pistons and came up with 56-34 win. it was Coleman’s ninth straight season of playing a game at The Palace.
“We kind of got off to a slow start,” Coleman’s Riley Bell said. “But being at The Palace, it was exciting and everything. After that, we took over. We kept the pressure on them. They didn’t have a ball handler.”
On Feb. 6, Coleman defeated Harrison 54-47. Ryan Walton had a big game with 17 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals. Tylor Rhynard had 12 points 13 boards and five assists while Bell added eight points and five assists and Tim Anderson put in eight points.
“For the Harrison game, we didn’t have practice on Sunday, being Super Bowl Sunday,” Bell said.
In a Coleman victory over Vestaburg 52-39, Rhynard paced Coleman with 11 points and five steals and Alex Brown had 10 points, seven assists and seven steals and Bell had nine points.
The Comets improved to 8-8 overall.
“It’s been an overall team effort and everyone is getting healthy,” Schunk said. “We’ve had a lot of injuries. All aspects of the game are better today.”
This previous Monday (Feb. 20) Coleman played at Farwell. Coleman is home Feb. 24 with Montabella in MSAC action.
Right now, you ‘d like to see your team peaking this time of year,” Schunk said. “Right now, we’re playing our best basketball. We’d like to continue on for another couple of weeks.”
The districts for Class C will be March 5-9 at Breckenridge.
It’s a very tough district,” Schunk said. “There’s Beaverton, Meridian and Saginaw Nouvel. We’ll meet the winner of Beaverton and Meridian. We got a bye the first round. That’s a very good draw for us. We went into overtime with Beaverton and were right there with Meridian.”
