The Trojans reeled off three consecutive wins to begin the season and are tied with Mason for the top spot in the league. The two teams are on a collision course to decide the title when they meet February 9 in Owosso.
Owosso has a deep squad this season, led by Ryan Slusher. Slusher won two individual events and was a part of two winning relays during the Trojan’s 116-64 win over Williamston that upped their record to 3-0 in the league. They also received wins from Jake Brooks (200 IM), Jared Matousek (diving), and Ryan Willis (100 backstroke).
* The Owosso wrestling team is enjoying a successful campaign this winter. Owosso upped its record to 17-9 in dual matches after going 5-0 at, and winning, the Ovid-Elsie tournament. The Trojans had five wrestlers go a perfect 5-0 on the day, including Miles Bartlett (103 pounds), Alex Smith (135), Ian Johnson (189), Matthew Guyski (215), and Blake VanStrate (285).
* The Corunna girls basketball team finished the first half of the season with a winning record. The Cavalier girls defeated rival Owosso 53-32 to improve their record to 6-4 at the halfway mark. Senior Morgan Cnudde led a balanced offense with 14 points. Sophomore Payton Birchmeier added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Cheyenne Kersjes had eight points and seven rebounds.
* The Carrollton Cavaliers wrestling team recorded a major double-double in the middle of January. First, the Cavaliers won their first league title in school history. With wins over Ithaca (66-12) and St. Charles (72-12), the Cavaliers clinched the Tri-Valley Conference West Division title with a 7-0 record. The wins also improved Carrollton’s overall record to 18-13. Carrollton followed up that performance by winning its own tournament championship later that week. The Cavaliers defeated Fulton 45-30 in the final of that tournament to cap a 4-0 day. Saginaw County champion Justin Fabin (189) went 4-0 as an individual on the day, while Bryce Baase (125) and Logan Baase (125) also turned in 4-0 records.
* The Corunna boys swim team opened the season with six wins in its first eight meets. The Cavaliers have been paced by Matt Renwick in diving and Scott Constine (freestyle) and Seth Barnes (backstroke) in swimming.
* Led by junior Robert Geoghegan, the Owosso boys basketball team is enjoying a strong season. The Trojans improved to 8-3 for the season when they defeated rival Corunna 53-49. Geoghegan turned in a solid all-around effort with 21 points and eight rebounds. Senior Ben Marr added 12 points and six rebounds, while point guard Nate Hall added 11 points.
* With solid play from freshman Mikhail Myles, the future is bright for the Corunna boys basketball team. In its showdown with rival Owosso, Myles totaled 18 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore MJ Myles added seven points and five assists in the game, while senior Brandon Hannah totaled 10 points.
* Swan Valley wrestling is enjoying a big season. The Vikings are ranked seventh in the state in Division 3. They are paced by a strong group of seniors including Zach Roethlisberger (125), Jered Flores (135), Leontay White (140), Matt Somers (145), and Mitch Mallott (152) who are all state-ranked in Division 3. Junior Dylan Ewald (112) and sophomore Josh Flores (130) are also state-ranked wrestlers.
