Scott Flowers got off to a 12-1 start for Bullock Creek in Decmeber , and the senior 152-pounder is hoping the good times continue for awhile.
Flowers pinned Cody Douglas of Belding in 3:36 in the title match of the Joe Loren Memorial Invitational on December 17 at Chippewa Hills.
Bullock Creek took third place, and Flowers was the team’s only individual champion.
“There was that one match [earlier in the season against Michigan Lutheran Seminary] I wasn’t happy with,” he said. “I didn’t come out to wrestle.”
Flowers has seen improvement in his wrestling from last year.
“Everything is falling into place,” he said. “I worked over the summer. I’m really good at riding on top.”
Flowers hopes to improve on his footwork and get more takedowns.
“I want to be a state champion,” he said. “I just have to work hard in practice every day.”
He gets a lot of help from teammates like Johnny Finney at 145 pounds, who took second at Chippewa Hills.
“Johnny helps us at practice working out,” Flowers said. “Brandon McCann is a pretty good wrestler. He was also a state qualifier last year.”
McCann took second place at Chippewa Hills at 160 pounds.
At the state finals last year, Flowers finished third and had a record of 48-2 at 140 pounds. Finney was seventh at 130 pounds with a final record of 52-9.
“I don’t know who’s on our schedule,” Flowers said. “I just show up and wrestle.”
In January, Flowers took third at the New Lothrop Invitational.
