One of the biggest upsets in the state football playoffs came in the largest division, with Detroit Cass Tech upending Detroit Catholic Central 49-13 for the Division 1 title November 26 at Ford Field. The Technicans were 6-3 during the regular season and 5-0 in the playoffs. Catholic Central ended its year at 12-2 after an 8-1 regular season.
Cass Tech’s freshman quarterback Jayru Campbell was on fire, throwing for 240 yards on 13 completions and tying the MHSAA finals record by connecting on five touchdown passes.
Cass Tech was in control 35-7 after the third quarter. Jenkins Royce gained 65 yards on 10 carries for the champs.
Royce had a 32-yard run in the first quarter and Cass Tech followed that with a 46-yard scoring pass from Campbell to Ruben Lile.
Campbell later had passes of 36 yards to Richard Terry, 16 yards to Shuron Jackson, 3 yards to Royce, and 46 yards to Jordan Lewis. Royce also had a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Cass Tech had a 334-226 advantage in total yards.
