Clare coach Kelly Luplow called it a wild game. But it almost went Clare’s way.
Freeland and its offense exploded past Clare 48-35 in the football season opener Friday night.
“I never anticipated giving up 48 and had never anticipated scoring 35,” Luplow said. “We are just so young on defense. There’s a learning curve there. We’re still working at it. We’ll get better, there’s no doubt because we’re so young. That’s a good thing. We couldn’t stop them. We were making bad decisions on defense.”
Brent Luplow passed for touchdowns of 30 and 74 to Aaron Haynak and 12 to Todd Wysong. He also threw an 11-yard pass to Jackson Gross.
Jackson Gross had 19 rushes for 154 yards and one touchdown.
Brent Luplow was 18-for-25 for 320 yards in the air and four touchdowns and one interception. Haynak had 12 catches for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
“These have to be like records,” said Kelly Luplow. “I can’t remember anybody doing what Brent and Aaron did last night.”
