Owosso traveled to Williamston on Friday to compete in the regional final meet. Sixteen teams competed in our regional meet where the top two finishers in each event qualify to compete in the state finals. There are also additional qualifier standards that athletes can meet to qualify if they finish outside of the top two. Overall, we were able to come away with a 7th place finish. Results were as follows:
1) Linden 79 2) Goodrich 76 3) Corunna 73 4) Williamston 64 5) Flint Powers Catholic 60 6) Fowlerville 56 7) Owosso 51 8) St. John’s 48 9) Lake Fenton 47 10) Haslett 45 11) Ortonville Brandon 27 12) Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 13 12) Lansing Sexton 13 14) Lansing Eastern 6 15) Flint Southwestern Academy 5 16) Pontiac 0
Not only did we do a great job as a team, individually we earned a lot of top 8 medals and even qualified 3 girls for the state finals in 4 events. Our top finisher of the day was REGIONAL CHAMPION high jumper Peyton Spicer! Peyton came away as the only girl to clear 5’0″ during the meet, very narrowly missing tying the school record at 5’3″. Peyton was also able to earn a 4th place medal for her personal best throw in discus of 89’0″, just 6″ out of 3rd place.
Returning to the state meet for their 2nd year in a row are pole vault phenoms Claire Agnew and Libby Summerland. Although they finished 2nd and 3rd place respectively, they both qualified by going an entire foot over the 9’3″ additional qualifying standard. As Claire finished 8th in the state last season with a vault of 9’9″, both Claire and Libby will be seeded in the top 5 with their vaults of 10’3″ (Libby’s personal best vault). Libby wasn’t done though. She went on to finish 2nd in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.5 in one of the most exciting races I have ever seen. Racing Layla Jordan from Goodrich for the 3rd time this season after losing the first two meetings by over a second each, Libby chased Layla down and beat her by 2 hundredths of a second!
There were four other events where our athletes finished in the top 8 and earned All-Regional honors. Kyle Bermudez accounted for 2 of these results. As only a freshman, Kyle finished 4th place in both pole vault as well as the 100m hurdles. The future is really bright for Kyle!
Claire Agnew earned two more medals to go along with her pole vault medal. Claire finished 7th in the 400m dash as well as 7th place along with teammates Libby Summerland, Emma Johnson, and Julionna West in the 4x400m relay.
Other personal best results today included:
Zayda Bentley – 100m and 200m
Michaela Nichols – 100m (season record) and 200m
Julionna West – 1600m
Cassie Gillett – Shot Put
Delaina Peterson – Discus
To everyone competing for the last time this season: I am so proud of hard work and dedication of all of you this season. You have brought me and so many others so much joy watching you give your all day after day and meet after meet. Thank you for an amazing season!
The state finals will take place on June 4th, but next up for our 3 state qualifiers (Peyton, Claire, and Libby) as well as Kyle Bermudez is the Playmakers Honor Roll Meet held on May 31st at MSU. The meet is for the best athletes in the Greater Lansing area. Currently, all 4 of our athletes are in the qualifying few for their events and will more than likely compete in the meet.
