Ovid-Elsie’s bid for a District title and an upset of Chesaning fell short as the Indians captured the championship, 44-26. The Lady Marauders finish the season 15-7.
“We came out strong and executed very well in the first quarter,” said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham. But they’re a good team and they adjusted well. We just didn’t have enough in the gas tank tonight.”
The Marauders got out to a great start and led 11-2 after the first stanza but it was all Chesaning after that as they rallied to close the gap to two points by half. A 14-3 third quarter kept OE at bay before edging out the Marauders 16-7 in the fourth.
Caitlyn Walter led OE with 8 points and had 5 rebounds while Kiah Longoria added 6 points and Lauren Barton 4 points to go along with 8 rebounds. Madison Cunningham chipped in with three points and 6 rebounds while Braylon Byrnes and Tristin Ziola added two points each and Allison Reppenhagen a free throw to round out the scoring for OE.
“Honestly, I couldn’t be prouder of this group. I wasn’t sure what to expect at the beginning of the season because we were so young and these girls accomplished a great deal. They should be proud of themselves and so should our school and community,” added Cunningham. “I’m sad to send our seniors out this way but they’ve left their mark on this program and we’ll continue to get better in the off season. Well be back.”
