Freeland coach Kevin Townsend
Freeland traveled to Bullock Creek tonight to take on the Lancer’s for their homecoming. It didn’t take the Falcons long to get on the board. Layne Moergeli took the 2nd play from scrimmage 44 yards for the touchdown. The PAT kick was no good and with 11:09 left in the first the Falcon’s had a 6-0 lead.
Bullock Creek answered right back with an 18 play 67 yard drive that ended with a Brent Gasser TD run. The extra point by Quentin Griese was good and with 1:48 to go in the 1st Creek had a 7-6 lead.
The Falcons would punt the ball away on their next possession and Creek would strike on their 2nd play with a 63 yard TD run by Tyler Chapman. A blocked PAT and Bullock Creek had a 13-6 lead with 11:50 to go in the 2nd.
On the next possession Jack Townsend came up with a huge catch on 4th and 9 for 18 yards that kept the drive alive. Two plays later Layne Moergeli punched in his second TD from 2 yards out. A 2pt conversion catch for Jayce Bourcier from sophomore QB Ben Wellnitz and the Falcons had the lead 14-13 with 8:30 to go.
On Bullock Creeks next possession Carston Yaw intercepted the ball and returned it 65 yards to the 4 yard line. Ben Wellnitz ran it in on a QB keeper. Left Guard, John Guerra, ran in the 2pt conversion and the had a 22-13 lead at half.
The Falcons kicked off to start the 3rd quarter and Bullock Creek fumbled the kick. Will Short came up with the recovery for the Falcons and 3 plays later Layne Moergeli had his 3rd TD run of the game. Layne also ran in the 2pt conversion and Freeland was out to a 30-13 with 11:25 to go in the 3rd.
The Falcons defense stepped up in the 3rd quarter and held the Lancers after a 15 play drive. Five plays later Ben Wellnitz found Carston Yaw open in the middle of the field and Carston took the 56 yards to the house. A Jack Townsend PAT would cap the scoring for the Falcons at 37-13 with 1:33 to go in the 3rd.
In the 4th quarter the Falcons would come up with a fumble recovery by Joe Melzo and would clear the bench for the whole 4th quarter. Bullock Creek would complete a TD pass with 26 seconds to go in the game to give the Falcons their 5th win of the season 37-20.
This was a great TEAM win in which everyone played a key role.
The 5-1 Falcons will host the 5-1 Alma Panthers next week at 7:00pm for homecoming.
