Here they go again.
The New Lothrop Hornets, as expected, are making a run for another banner football season. They have started out 5-0. They have won 10 games for more for the last seven seasons.
The Hornets have stormed through the first five games after a close call in a 26-22 win over Lake Fenton to open the season. The Hornets are expecting challenges in their final four regular season games including from the likes of Detroit Vouyaguer (4-1), Flint Beecher and Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary which handed New Lothrop its only regular season loss in 2016 by a 24-20 score in week nine.
Clint Galvas is coaching the team for his ninth season.
“We’re pleased with where we’re at,” he said. “We just have to take steps forward to improve. We continue to do that. It will be one-game-at-a-time obviously. Lutheran Seminary is ranked on our schedule as one we’re looking forward to.”
Senior captain Mason Ruddy, free safety-running back, is in his third varsity season and has been a leader of sorts.
Sophomore quarterback Avery Moore has been having a strong season for the Hornets. In a 56-28 shootout win over Flint Hamady, he ran for six touchdowns and passed for another to lead a New Lothrop team that totaled 537 yards.
“Our offensive line, as a whole, has been playing pretty well together. There’s only one senior on the offensive line and the rest are juniors,” Galvas said. “With those four juniors, three played varsity last year, and they’re getting more experience. That’s contributed to our success. Defensively, we’ve been doing a pretty good job. This week we probably gave up more points than we’d like against a Hamady team. But when you play teams with good athletes and give them some space, that’s what happens.”
Cross country
Freshman Carson Hersch has been having a strong season for New Lothrop’s cross country team. His personal record was an 18:01.6 at the Genesee Invitational. He also had an 18:31.7 at the 33rd annual Chesaning Invitational.
For the New Lothrop girls, it’s Courtney Krupp’s senior season and she’s having a good one. In three of her first five meets she was first at the Carrollton Invitational, the Genesee Invitational and the GAC Jamboree No. 1 meet. She was second at the 33rd annual Chesaning Invitational. Her personal best was 18:53.8 at the Genesee Invitational.
