Breckenridge girls track coach Griffin Bohannon was impressed with his team’s performance in the most important meet of the season.
“I was very happy with the girls performance in the state finals,” he said.
Breckenridge placed 15th and scored 16 points at the meet. Brooklyn Federspiel placed fourth in shot put (36-2).
“She had a real nice throw to get herself a spot in the finals,” Bohannon said. “From there, we felt pretty good after she got to the finals that she would medal. She had a nice throw in the finals.”
“The 4×800 meter relay team was third in 9:52.6 for a school record with the group of freshman Annie Laurenz, senior Carly Jenkins and juniors Ellen Laurenz and Chloe Brittain.
“We were very excited to go down there with a school record,” Bohannon said. “We were excited to get third there.”
Brittain, the anchor in the 4×800, was fourth in the 800-meter run (2:21.86).
“She made a move for the lead with about 300 meters to go,” Bohannon said. “It’s what she and I had talked about. She put herself up in front. But a couple of girls had more than she did that day and she wound up fourth. It was a nice race and what I was hoping for. She set a new personal record.
“Everything went really well all day. The only real downfall was I had a freshman hurdler, Anne Laurenz, who ended up ninth in the 300 hurdles a tenth of a second from all-state. She fell on the third to the last hurdle. There were three girls on the fast heat out of eight that fell. It was a bummer for her. But she was able to get up strong and take ninth. That was the only sour spot of the day.”
Breckenridge had qualified five girls for the meet.
“We wanted a top 10 (as a team), but with fall in the hurdles, it was tough to make up those six to eight points we were counting on there,” Bohannon said. “I thought the girls ran very well. We were overall very happy.”
