Sebastion San Miguel is coaching a Breckenridge baseball team that has made big strides in its first season in the Mid-State Activities Conference. The Huskies started out 15-3 and in the MSAC was 10-0.
“The season is going well,” San Miguel said. “Right now the kids are playing well. We’re looking to keep going on our winning streak.”
Among the team’s top hitters has been junior infielder-pitcher Caden Foster, who is batting .480 as leadoff hitter with an on-base percentage of .526.
“He’s doing very well this year with 24 hits and nine RBIs,” SanMiguel said.
Noah Bleiler, a senior infielder-outfielder, is batting .405, with a on-base percentage of .519.
“He’s helping the team a lot with driving in some runs himself,” SanMiguel said.
Gracen Garcia is batting .417 with 19 RBIs. He’s a third baseman, utility player and right-handed pitcher.
Another top pitcher has been Spencer Brown and Brad Siler.
It’s San Miguel’s 10th season as coach.
“We’ve been undefeated earlier in the season another time,” he said. “This year so far in the league, at 10-0, we’ve done well. Last year, we were second in the TVC with the same group of kids. Now we’re in the MSAC and doing well. They are playing well with each other.”
Breckenridge Softball
Michael Ricco’s team has been around the .500 mark this season.
“We’re young this year,” Ricco said. “We’ve battled the entire season. I feel we’re at the point where we’re almost ready to get over the hump. We have one or two bad innings and it gets rough for us. We’re trying to get mentally focused to stay in the game for seven innings.”
Top pitcher has been Syd Willman, a sophomore.
Top hitters include Amiah Cole, who is over the .500 mark. Madison Smith has also been past the .500 clip.
Breckenridge track
Breckenridge’s track team has been focusing on the MSAC title. In a MSAC meet on May 10, the Huskies had 151.33 points to finish ahead of CC-Crystal. The Breckenridge girls were second behind Sacred Heart.
The Huskies boys were first and the girls second in the first MSAC jamboree earlier this season. The third and final jamboree will be in late May.
For the boys, Caden Foster has been having a strong season in the sprints. He was first in the recent league meet with a personal record of 11.63 seconds The Huskies took five of the first six spots in that meet.
Foster also won the 200 in 23.72 seconds. Alex Giles and Hunter Chovanec were one-two in the 3,200-meters.
The Huskies have been solid in the 400 and 800 relays with Hunter Collins, Colten Carter, Caleb Hurt and Foster, plus Kyle Pioszak and Willman. Brennan Waslusky has been strong in the throws and Grant Willman in the long jump.
The girls have been enjoying a strong season also in track and field.
Chloe Brittain has been running well in the 800 meters, and had a personal record of 2:22.34 in the Shepherd Blue Jay Invitational.
Her 1,600 meter relay team, which includes Annie Laurenz, Carly Jenkins and Ellen Laurenz placed second at the Alma College Scottie Classic in 4:15.68. The same foursome won the 3,200 meter relay in 10:09.80. Laurenz and Ellen Laurenz have also been shining in the 300-meter hurdles. Brooklyn Federspiel and Natasha Netzley have done well in the throws. Laurenz is excelling in the pole vault.
