Golfers from across the state battled some of the worst weather of the season as they competed for team and individual honors at the MHSAA state finals. High School Sports Scene puts the wraps on the state tournaments and how area teams performed in crunch time.
DIVISION 1
It could not have been any closer, as Traverse City West edged out Rochester for the Division 1 state title at The Meadows At Grand Valley State University. The two teams both finished with scores of 685, but Traverse City West won the tie breaker.
Traverse City was paced by Anika Dy, who finished second as an individual with a two-day total of 156.
Julia Dean of Brighton captured individual medalist honors with rounds of 82 and 73 to finish with a two-day total of 155. Dean helped Brighton to a ninth-place finish as a team. Annie Pietila totaled a 179 and Heather Fortushniak totaled a 184 for the tournament.
Novi finished in fifth place as a team with a score of 696. Alexa Hatz paced Novi with a two-day total of 164. Abby Livingston added a 172, while Maya Grandstaff and Lauren Henry both totaled 180.
Davison finished 11th as a team. Kamryn Johnston led the Cardinals with a 164, as she carded rounds of 82 and 82. Karsen Johnston shot a 175.
Holt placed 14th as a team. Ashley Folleth led Holt with a 172, while Lauren Sanford added a 194.
DIVISION 2
Birmingham Seaholm claimed the Division 2 state team title with a 664 at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek. Midland Dow placed second with 677, while South Lyon was third with 692 and Okemos fourth with 706.
Jordan Michalak led the way for Seaholm, as she placed third as an individual with a 159 total. Catherine Markley and Allegra Cunningham both shot 164 for Seaholm and tied for eighth place.
Stephanie Carras led the way for Midland Dow. Carras fired rounds of 78 and 80 to finish in second place individually. Alexis Carras shot rounds of 81 and 78 to finish in a tie for third place.
Karina VanDuiney of Reeths-Puffer won the individual medalist honors with a 156 total.
Jessica Kim led the way for Okemos, as she totaled 167 for the tournament. Kaylie Anderson totaled 178, Christine Maisner totaled 180, and Lauren Kim totaled 181 for an Okemos team that featured plenty of balance.
Flushing placed sixth as a team with a total of 720. Kerrigan Parks led Flushing with a 160 total, while Brooke Thomas added a 171.
St. Johns finished in eighth place with a 734 total. Abby Murray led St. Johns with a 175, while Alli Eccleton added a 182, Adriann Simison a 186, and Mikayla Quaderer a 191.
South Lyon East took 11th with a 750 total. Kiersten Van Norden led the team with a 171.
DIVISION 3
Spring Lake dominated the competition in Division 3, as it totaled a 661 to win the title by a total of 70 strokes at Forest Akers West Course at Michigan State University. It was led by individual medalist Anna Kramer, who totaled a 154, and Kayla Krueger, who finished third individually with a 158.
Goodrich took second place with a 731, followed by Cranbrook Kingswood in third place with a 733 and Detroit Country Day in fourth with 735.
Goodrich was paced by the duo of Sydni and Taylor Harding. Sydni Harding placed fifth as an individual with a 162, while Taylor placed seventh overall with a total of 165.
Kate Cao led Cranbrook Kingswood with a 175, while Molly Wiener totaled a 178.
Detroit Country Day was led by the duo of Mallika and Simran Brar. Mallika Brar shot a 166 while Simran Brar shot a 172.
DIVISION 4
Hackett Catholic Prep led the way in Division 4 at Forest Akers East Course at Michigan State University with a team score of 684. Lutheran High School North placed second at 693, while Frankenmuth totaled a 722 to placed third. Lansing Catholic placed fifth as a team with 761, while Freeland placed 12th.
Nichole Cox of Glen Lake won medalist honors with a two-day total of 150.
Meg Watkins paced Frankenmuth and finished second overall as an individual with rounds of 81 and 75, for a 156 total. Shayna Schneider totaled a 175 for Frankenmuth, while Hannah Turk totaled 194.
Lansing Catholic was paced by Abigail Meder with a 173 total. Elaina Walling added a 191, and Grace Castle totaled 194.
For Freeland, Olivia Pumford led the way with a 196 total, while Lily Beyer was right behind with a 198 total.
