Girls’ Track Athlete of the Year

Karrigan Smith

St. Johns High School

Karrigan Smith helped stun the rest of the field while leading St. Johns to a Division 2 state championship.

The Sports Scene Girls’ Track Athlete of the Year capped her high school career in style and helped the Redwings edge Flint Southwestern by two points for their first state girls’ track championship. Smith, who will continue her running career at Michigan State University, repeated as the state champion in the 1,600-meter run, took third in the 800, and was part of runner-up 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams on the Redwings’ historic day.

Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year

Grant Fisher

Grand Blanc High School

Grant Fisher has been in the news lately. The Grand Blanc senior was recently named the National Gatorade Cross Country Runner for the second straight season and become only the seventh high school runner to ever run the mile in under four minutes

Before graduating, Fisher shattered many MHSAA records, so it was only fitting to make him the Sports Scene Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year.

Fisher, who is off to Stanford University in the fall, claimed first place in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and set state records in the 1,600 (4:00.28) and in the mile (4:01.66) at the Division 1 state meet in late May.

He finished his prep career with three straight individual state titles in the 3,200 and two in the 1,600. Fisher also won his second straight championship at the Adidas Dream Mile in New York.
