Another season of high school girls’ golf is in the books, as four state champions were crowned in mid October. High School Sports Scene magazine takes a look at the state finals and how area golfers fared.
DIVISION 1
East Kentwood was the dominant team this season, and that dominance carried over to the postseason. The Falcons won the Division 1 tournament at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek with rounds of 324 and 319 to finish with a 643 total, 22 strokes better than second-place Lake Orion. East Kentwood’s Sarah White was the top individual with rounds of 73 and 73 for a 146 total. Jaclyn Fanola of Monroe was second with 147. Ashley Folleth of Holt qualified as an individual and finished with 165 (79-86), while Rockford’s Tori Sobkowiak finished with 172 (85-87).
Davison was the top local finisher, as the Cardinals placed fifth with a 682 total after carding identical rounds of 341. Kamryn Johnston led Davison with 161 (81-80), while Karsen Johnston totaled 170 (84-86).
Grand Blanc placed 14th with 755. Allison Bruett led Grand Blanc with 173 (91-82).
DIVISION 2
Birmingham Seaholm ran away from the competition at the Division 2 finals held at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing. It totaled rounds of 331 and 329 to finish with 660, 37 shots better than second-place South Lyon. Seaholm also boasted the individual medalist, as Jamie Greene finished with 151 (79-72), six strokes better than her teammate Allegra Cunningham, who finished second with 157 (76-81).
Okemos was the top local school, as the Chieftains placed fourth with 721. Sydney Williams led Okemos with rounds of 87 and 87 to finish with a 174 total, while Jessica Kim finished with rounds of 87 and 88 for a 175 total.
Midland Dow was one stroke behind in fifth place. Stephanie Carras finished fourth overall with 162 (87-75). Alexis Carras also had a solid tournament, with rounds of 84 and 91 for a 175 total.
Greenville placed ninth with 764. The Yellowjackets had good balance, as Amanda Kerschen led the way with 184 (92-92), followed by Karlina Didion (193), Taylor Hansen (193), and Anne Hilt (194).
Flushing finished 10th with 778. Kerrigan Parks finished ninth as an individual, as she carded rounds of 84 and 84 to finish with a 168 total.
East Lansing finished 12th with a 793 team score. Molly Ring led the team with 185 (90-95), followed by Claire Fossum with 192 (97-95).
St. Johns placed 13th with an 801 team score. Abby Murray led the Redwings with 188 (97-91), while Adriann Simison finished with 198 (100-98).
DIVISION 3
Spring Lake captured the Division 3 state championship with a strong showing at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing. The Lakers finished with a 659 total, 18 strokes better than second place Cranbrook-Kingswood. Cordelia Chan of Cranbrook-Kingswood captured medalist honors with 150 (75-75), while Anna Kramer of Spring Lake was second with 153 (78-75).
Lakewood was the top local finisher, as the Vikings placed seventh with a 738 total. Emily Barker finished third overall with a 160 total (79-81). Kennedy Hilley finished with 178 (85-93).
Competing at the state meet as individuals from the area were Taylor Harding of Goodrich, who shot 164 (86-78); Haley McKenna of Big Rapids, who totaled 175 (89-86); Bre White of Cedar Springs, who totaled 187 (90-97); and Christin Landis of Charlotte, who totaled 191 (97-94).
DIVISION 4
Hackett Catholic Central captured the Division 4 state title at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University. It ran away from the competition and finished with a 690 total, 33 strokes better than Harbor Springs.
Nichole Cox of Glen Lake won medalist honors, as she finished with a 159 total (83-76). Bria Colosky of Farwell finished second with a 160 total (83-77).
Powers Catholic placed eighth as a team with a 771 total. Reanna Barth led Powers, as she placed ninth overall with 171 (84-87).
Frankenmuth placed ninth with an 802 total. Shayna Schneider placed fourth overall with 166 (88-78), while Meg Watkins was sixth with 168 (83-85).
Freeland finished 11th with 826. Tori Argyle led the way with 184, while Lauren Guentert finished with 194.
Central Montcalm finished in 12th place with 841. Ava Miller led with 196, while Tawny Graves finished with 208.
