As a blizzard raged outside, the action inside heated up quickly Saturday at the Muskegon Basketball Showcase three-game tournament at Redmond-Potter Gymnasium on the campus of Muskegon High School.
Detroit Consortium Prep looked worthy of its preseason hype in an impressive 70-35 victory over defending Michigan Class A semifinalist Grand Rapids Christian in the day’s opening game.
Josh Jackson, a 6-7 wingman who is rated the No. 2 sophomore player in the country, scored a game-high 18 points, including three dunks, to lead the Cougars. Fellow sophomore Luster Johnson scored 12 points, serving notice that Consortium should be strong for several years to come.
Deleon Brown led GR Christian with 16 points.
The 5 p.m. game is a showdown between two of the nation’s best senior guards – Xavier recruit Edmond Sumner of Detroit Country Day against Kentucky-bound Tyler Ulis of Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights, Ill.)
The final game of the day will feature an inside showdown between Chicago Curie 6-9 senior Cliff Alexander, the No. 4-ranked senior player in the country who has committed to Kansas, against Muskegon High 6-9 junior Deyonta Davis, who recently committed to Michigan State.
