Midland Dow tennis team improves to 11-0-1

Dow improved to 11-0-1 on the year after drawing to a tie with #2 Forest Hills Northern and besting #4 Grosse Pointe South 6-2 and #10 Forrest Hills Central 8-0. Dow next plays SVL opponent Bay City Central on Monday. Scores Attached.
“Today was a rollercoaster of emotions. I knew this quad would be a definitive moment in terms of where we stood in the state…and I am not disappointed. We had our chances against FHN, we just couldn’t materialize them. Dropping three third set breakers was a tough pill to swallow, but it also shows me that we can beat them as a team considering all of our wins were straight sets. On the flip side, I was extremely pleased with how we handled GPS. Top to bottom, I think this team is getting tougher by the day, and by October, I think we can avenge the flights we lost.”
The lineups for the FHC match were altered by both programs in order to create a “fun” match. As Dow and FHC face each other at a minimum of 2 more times in the season (and some flights 3). We mixed singles and doubles lineups and nobody was placed in the correct position.

Coach Nick O’Neil:

– Alma came out with tired legs and their play was sluggish to start the game.

– Bryce made a great play to dribble around the keeper and set up his teammate for a tap in goal to give Alma the only first half goal.

– Swan Valley controlled play at the start of the second half but Alma’s defense was able to hold them without a goal

– Play opened up after Bryce scored and put Alma up 2-0 in the second half

– Overall it wasn’t Alma’s best performance but the boys showed grit by playing through injury and fatigue for the win
