Rockford and defending Division 1 state champion East Lansing sat near the top of the Division 1 boys basketball rankings all season so it came as no surprise when the Rams and Trojans met in the finals of the Division 1 boys basketball tournament.
A new champion was crowned this year as Rockford came away with a 54-50 win to earn the Division 1 state title.
A balanced attack was key for Rockford led by the Bascom brothers. Josh Bascom led the way with 14 points while Jake Bascom added 11 points. Jace Opoku-Agyeman added 13 points for the Rams.
For Rockford, which finished the season with a 25-3 record, the state title was the first since 2003. The Rams also played in the 2012 state championship game.
East Lansing finished the season with a 27-2 record. The Trojans were led by this year’s Mr. Basketball winner, KJ Torbert, who finished with a game-high 28 points.
