Portland coach Joel Cross: Portland won the CAAC White Championship last Friday! This is only the boy’s 3rd time in the history of the CAAC to win the league and the first time since 2012. The boys started the day with an advantage. They had already won all of the dual matches. This had earned them 4 points in the championship race. Lansing Catholic was in 2nd with 3 points and Ionia and Eaton Rapids were tied at 1.5 points each. The matches Friday would form the other half of the puzzle. Portland looked pretty rusty on the day. It had been two weeks since our last match and it definitely showed in footwork and timing. The team managed to dig in and win some key matches though. Overall they ended up tying LCHS head to head. But we had some bigger wins and Lansing Catholic had some unexpected losses. Those scores eked out a 2 point victory for us and earned another 4 points in the league race. We clinched with 8 total points. LCHS was second with 6. Eaton Rapids ended up scoring more points in the tournament than Ionia so they took third with 3.5 points and Ionia finished the year with 2.5 points. League champions for Portland were Aryan Virk at 1 singles. He was also the best player in the league. Jack Roe at 2 singles. Alex Russman and Kurt Kraczon at 2 doubles, and Kai Kipp and Casey Smith at 4 doubles. The Raiders played again Tuesday at home against Holt.
