Why does Dow have such a strong tennis program?

It’s definitely linked hand-in-hand to the Midland Community Tennis Center, for sure. Everyone on the team practices there, even when it’s not tennis season. That, and we have such good coaches; they know what they’re talking about.

What made you want to play tennis?

Before I was in high school, my mom started working at the tennis center, and she talked me into playing. I played so regularly, it was just a given that I would play tennis in high school. High school tennis is probably my favorite because of the chemistry you have between your teammates. In high school tennis, you get close to the other girls.

Why do you think you’ve had so much individual success?

Definitely the experience, for sure. When I was a sophomore, when I was number one doubles, my partner and I got to the state finals but we lost. Last year we came back and we were so set and ready for it. The experience of knowing what to expect and being able to handle the pressure and expecting hundreds of people to be watching me and not letting it get to us is what makes our team solid.

Do you think you have a chance to win a state title at no. 4 singles?

It’s a lot different; I’m still kind of adjusting [to playing singles.] I do like singles, but I miss doubles already. I am definitely aiming for another state title this year; I am driven to get it. I hope I don’t jinx it.

The team has had some good success in recent years, winning a state title your freshman year, runner-up as a sophomore, and third last year. How does it feel to be a part of such a good program?

Honestly, when I was younger I didn’t even appreciate the wins. It was just expected. We were the best team around. This year has really changed my perspective – not every flight wins. We lost a few this last tournament, and that’s something I haven’t seen. That’s how tough the competition is and how strong you have to be to be the number one team.

How do you think the team can do this year?

We are ranked fifth in the state as a team. Clarkston and Port Huron are the teams to beat. I am thinking if we keep improving, we have a good shot at placing at state.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of tennis?

Tennis takes up a lot of my time; I am usually relaxing when I’m not playing. I like to paint a lot; I am really into art at my school.

Do you have any college plans yet?

I am registering for classes at Delta; I am going for Sonography. I’ve always been interested in the medical field. I’m really squeamish about blood and things like that. With sonography, I feel like I can help people and be in the medical field without having to cut into people. I can help from the outside.

What are you going to miss the most about high school tennis?

So many things. I am just going to miss my teammates the most and seeing everyone every day. We do so many team bonding things. I am going to miss the people the most.
